Our first full persona build, and what a finished one can look like. We use HomeBot in our own house to help us with everything, without sacrificing our privacy.
Why we built it
We want AI and privacy to be easy for anyone to use, and a privacy-first platform for all the cool stuff people are building.
Works offline. The AI runs on your own computer and searches the files stored there, so your bot can keep working with the internet off. How much it can do offline depends on what you build.
BuildBot: build your own bot
BuildBot is the base every PuffPAI starts from. Say what bot you want, in your own words, and it builds you your own bot on your own computer, with its brain running there: it finds apps, books and live info for your goal, shows you one plan, and builds it after your yes. Every build keeps the three security zones and comes with a team of seven agents. Free and open source (Apache 2.0), for Windows and Linux. The Mac version (macOS 14 or newer) is new, and reports are welcome.
The wizard
It checks your computer.
Memory, graphics card and free disk space. Then it recommends an AI model that fits, and you can pick another. Models too big for your computer are never offered.
You say what bot you want.
In your own words, like "a garden helper for my vegetable beds". It offers a name made from your words.
It shows you one plan.
The brain, the books it can learn, live info, and the outside services it may use, each with its size. Nothing is downloaded yet.
You say yes and choose a vault PIN.
Then it builds exactly that plan.
It finds apps for your goal.
While it builds, it looks for an app for each part of your goal. Each one waits for your yes, and Drawbridge checks the code before anything runs.
It shows you around.
A tour of your new bot: where to add tools and apps, how to unlock your vault, and how to give it your own files and books.
Toolsmith. This is the one agent on your 7-agent team that goes out and finds things for you: it searches for, finds and installs the apps your bot needs. Some smaller models have a hard time keeping up with everything Toolsmith does, so you can (optional) connect it to a frontier model, with your own key, for the building part. It is the only agent that can.

Your knowledge base
A big part of every build is what your bot knows. It starts with only what its AI model already knows, and you grow its library, in the wizard and any time after.
Your own files. Upload documents, or link a folder: linked folders are read where they are, never copied or changed. Keys and personal details it finds go into your vault, not the library.
Public libraries. Offline Wikipedia, Stack Exchange Q&A, TED talks, and medical and survival references from Kiwix, plus Project Gutenberg, OpenStax, and Wikipedia topic books made from your own words. They download once, then work with the internet off.
It learns in the background. Fast word search first, then meaning search, so your bot can answer while it learns.

The team in every build
Every PuffPAI comes with three security zones and a team of seven agents. In theory, these agents can handle whatever jobs you give them, on any bot you build. They still need development, so if you code, this is a good place to help: tell us on the issue tracker.

The one you talk to. Your conversations with your bot go through it.

Keeps your vault and your library. Your keys and private details go into the vault through it, and nothing comes out without your PIN.
Drawbridge the Bridgeinternet
Guards the Bridge, the one way out. It can say no to any action that changes something, and it checks every book, live card and service before your bot uses it.
Toolsmith the Bridgeinternet
Finds, installs and checks the apps your bot needs. It works in the Bridge and is kept out of your vault, your files and BuildBot's own parts. The only agent that can use a frontier model, if you choose it.

Two agents deal with the internet. Toolsmith is the one that goes out: it searches for and downloads the apps your bot needs. Every request it makes crosses the Bridge, the one way out of your computer. Drawbridge never goes out itself. It guards the Bridge and checks what crosses it, including every app Toolsmith brings back, before anything runs. The other five stay on your computer and your home network. Outside services like weather and web search also cross the Bridge, and only after you switch them on or say yes to them in the plan.
Where everything lives
Your computer sits on your home network, and your router is its only link to the internet. The Vault opens only with your PIN. The Brain holds five agents and your knowledge base, fed by your own files and by public libraries. Everything BuildBot sends out crosses the Bridge, where Drawbridge checks it, and what comes back is data, never instructions. Apps you said yes to can still go online on their own. Open full size

It plugs into the stack you already run, all of it optional: Home Assistant, Jellyfin, Calibre-Web, Node-RED, your own search box, your router's DNS. Every way out has a name and a switch, and HomeBot's Bridge ships closed.
Hobbyists
Tinker with every part of it. Pick a model from the ones your hardware can actually run. Add your own apps, skills and agent names, upload a 3-D avatar, hang it on a wall screen, or give it a voice on Linux.

Why PuffPAI

The Vault
Your private papers, notes and voice. Anything personal is caught on arrival: a document's original goes into the encrypted Vault with only a redacted copy left searchable, and anything said is scrubbed from working memory. PIN to open. Even the AI has to ask.
